The Unique Beauty of the Highlands
I’m drawn to the high country. I can’t get enough of mountains, alpine lakes, lush valleys.
It’s probably because I spent my boyhood in the lowlands – the marshes and bayous of southeast Louisiana. I grew up at sea level, well actually 3 to 6 feet/1 to 2 meters below sea level in New Orleans.
I road my bike on the only hill I ever knew, the Mississippi river levee. During flood season the mighty Miss-a-sip lapped the concrete embankments on the river side. I’d glide my bike down to River road, where just 30 yards away at the same elevation, the river rushed by me. If the earthen dam disappeared, the road, the huge oak trees dripping with moss and every home in sight would be submerged in the muddy river waters.
Louisiana is beautiful in its own way. For me nothing can match the majestic and sublime elements that paint stunning mountain landscapes. They are cathedrals of stone, clouds and sky. Just a few years ago I began exploring these spaces. Here I share my journeys, while still a humble newcomer among the waves of stone that are the earth’s mountain ranges.
